Hi, I’m Bob Kilpatrick, the Director of Digital Development at Seven Days. My primary job is to help keep the site moving forward as a useful tool for our readers. A funny thing happened during the development of our new Auto Finder project. It was such a good fit for me that I became the auto guy here as well. Now I get to write about my interest in cars and create videos about some of my experiences.
For as long as I can remember cars have been an important part of my life. My Dad has always owned car dealerships and raced MGs. Some of my earliest memories are from Limerock Park race track, playing with my own toy cars as life-sized racers zoomed by just outside the fence. When I was about seven years old I watched my Dad on our little black and white TV crashing on Wide World of Sports at Sebring Raceway. Talk about “the agony of defeat." I still remember thinking “wow, he looks pissed."
My first car was a van, a 1970 VW Bus. At 16 I wasn’t yet doing my own mechanical work, but without any previous experience I re-did the interior of the van. When I was done it was a totally pimped out ride with brown shag rug, fake rabbit fur walls and a big old bed. It was like my first own home. Had some good times in that bus.
Though I spent my youth bouncing around in the back seat of little foreign convertibles I didn’t initially take to them the way my Dad would have liked. I was drawn to bigger American muscle cars, especially Mopars. I’ve had a bunch including 2 Barracudas, a couple of Darts, a Duster and the only non-Mopar, a ’67 Mustang. It was on those cars that I learned how to perform my own maintenance and repairs like rebuilding carbs, fixing brakes, changing oil and tuning them up.
My Dad is retired now down in Florida, but he still races his 1962 MGB convertible several times a year. This winter I’m going to head down and get my own racing license with his help. This is the start of a whole bunch of new adventures for me and I hope you’ll tag along (by virtue of my blog ;-)
It won’t be all about me and my adventures though. I’ll be providing lots of current info on new and used cars to help you make a good decision when it’s time to buy a new car or repair your old one.
And every Monday you can catch Bob Sr.’s guest blog post covering highlights from the previous weekend’s auto racing.
Safe travels,
Bob
